• Audience 7.8 - This is well worth getting if you want to know what was happening before the big time. Good big hall sound, not overly echoey or boomy at all.
  • Audience 7.4 - 8.3 - Don’t let the ratings dissuade you from this one – for one thing, the material is all remastered and sounding as good as possible, which in most cases you will find it sounds better than most of the mid 70’s Top audience tapes out there. The never before circulated 1969 material sounds particularly good, in fact you might be quite astonished at how good it is.
  • Audience 8.8 - Well here it is folks, the BEST early vintage ZZ Top recording to ever surface. We already gave up a long time ago that the band would dig into their archives for us, but now it’s been completely left up to the fans to provide the early documents…and for better or worse they have (mostly worse). After all this time a tape has surfaced that presents a powerful early testament to the rocking blues power of ZZ Top before they “made it” to the FM bigtime.  The hits were already in the repertoire, but only hinting at the massive success to come. This is the REAL DEAL – a clear, loud, balsy tape from very early in the bands career.   • Audience 8.6 - What this old tape delivers in terms of sonic clarity and atmosphere for such a vintage ZZ Top performance has to rank it at the top of the list of must-haves for ANY collector of this band’s music. Yes, it is nothing short of a revelation, uncovering a lot of the muck, dirt, mud and distortion that most, if not all, of the early and mid ‘70’s bootlegs seem to have present. That is not to say this tape is “excellent” or even “great” as far as how it would be measured in a laboratory, but the lab is your own ear, and your mental tape measure for previous examinations of early Top.  What I am saying is, this tape allows you to hear not just Billy’s immense tone, but also the notes played on bass, and they are separate just enough to let you get a bona fide realistic feel for what this concert sounded like – you can sense position, size (of venue), PA, crowd, pretty much all of the elements of a gig in a VERY reasonably well documented way by taper. Some hiccups, nothing major or too distracting and thankfully brief, and some between song hollering near the mic but music comes through without much frustration and man, that tone!  Oh, and it must have been a really good night for the guys, they are playing fluidly and in high spirits. Kudos to whoever remastered this gem, or I should say whoever remastered this tape created a real gem.   • Audience 7.2 - Not a well defined sound, I think drums are fine with a nice staccato sound. The guitar has a particular bite to it though, I am probably too harsh of a judge here since 70’s ZZ Top recordings are few and far between.
  • Audience tape of mediocre quality, about a 5.4 rating - maybe, but here's the thing - there are a handful of live tapes of this band from this vintage or thereabouts - until the band release what they have, this is all we will ever get. It's two discs worth of vintage ZZ Top before they made it big - I can deal with the mediocre sound.
  • Soundboard 9.6 - A high point of this show is the song "We're Barefootin'", the only known performance of the song. There's the "Crosses Sermon", from none other than Rev. Willie G. and one helluva La Grange Medley too! Great vibe and the crowd is insane. Ahhhh, the good 'ol days!   • Audience 7.8 - What I like about this tape is that the guitar is not only right up front, but the tone is present, you can hear that lush Les Paul phatness! Not a spectacular mix for the bass and drums but if you want Billy you got him.
  • Audience 8.3 - Whenever you come across any 70’s ZZ Top, your instantly going to ask “how does it sound”? because we all know how rough most of them are – but this one reveals layers of the band previously lost in a dense fog of distortion and volume – an articulate bass. Billy’s tone is lovely as ever but only his solos soar above the rhythm section who are LOUD but not distorted. One to pick up!
  • Audience 8.5 - This band, while known as a blues band, played at rock and roll volume. That is why most of their 70’s recordings are either muddy or distorted. This one is creeping up to the very edge of distortion but it does not cross over – it does max out the headroom of the tape though. Look at the rating, it’s a very, very good recording considering the scarcity…and the amazing set list! Come on, if you are a fan, dive into this one!
  • Audience 8.6 - A tape that starts off pretty rough and then gets better and better until it is quite good and clear, especially nice when you consider that it has taken the better part of 40 years to start getting half decent ZZ Top live recordings.
  • Audience 8.4 - Another one of those audience recordings that, while being listenable and clear, does not have a great separation of instruments or vocal clarity. That being said, this recording is certainly worth having, because it’s not a pile of muddy crap – it’s very listenable. Features a packed set list too. During full band loud jam sections I find the guitar too low in the mix, but just fine in most of the sections where the overall band intensity is not as high (like during Zoot Allures, for instance).   • Pro Recording 9.1 - The engineers for this live recording opted to not close mic so you have a live recording with lots of atmosphere and probably sounding truer to the actual event than a pure soundboard.  The bass is well recorded here, normally you’d expect the sound mix to favor only guitar as that is what the fans are wanting most – but here the mix is rather democratic.   • Audience 7.4 - Vocals and Guitar are audible above the denseness. Not a clear tape, but surprisingly it is very quiet meaning I believe this is VERY low generation if not from a master source. Decent for 1971, we take what we can get!
  • Audience 7.7 - Thin sound but guitar and vocals very present. Not all that bad really. Can enjoy this one.
  • Audience 8.0 - A good reference recording, does not deliver a palette full of dynamic sound colorization or anything like that but it is a pretty clear, one-dimensional recording. One thing I can say is that collectors will want this, as any 1972 show is well worth having in my opinion and this one is very decent even if it lacks a solid low end (not necessarily thin, just not a lot of bottom).

  • Audience 8.8 - I can’t fault this too much even though it is not a tape without a certain sonic limitation – but it’s not enough of a fault to be critical of what is a fantastic performance paired with a warm, energy filled tape. It’s a great capture that barely holds the intensity before it begins to break-up, albeit only slightly, as the volume overwhelms the microphone. Is that bad?  Normally it spells disaster if the recording equipment is, say, a realistic or some no-name generic piece of crap but this taper is obviously using high end stuff. The point at which volume and intensity causes normal gear to fail only slightly bother this set-up. So, I recommend it as one of the better 1976 tapes out there. It’s simply great and you’ll love it.   • Audience 8.7 - If you took any audience tape from 1983 with an 8.7 rating, this show would still sound better because for some reason, I guess maybe it’s the microphones or something, but recordings made in the 70’s have more of a warmth, a more natural texture and quality to the sound.
  • Audience 8.8 - Decent sound quality with good low end which helps immensely. The louder you crank this the more realistic it gets. Mix-wise, I hear guitar maybe a little low, but bass, drums, vocals especially present.
  • CD 1 - London Roundhouse 1971 – Aud 7.6 - Can hear it all, but there is some hiss present. CD 2 - Amougies 1969 – Audience 7.8 - Some tape hiss, but can hear every instrument. Not a full rich sound by any means, it’s an audience tape from 1969, but that being said I still enjoyed it and it’s a pretty frenetic show, a little unhinged even.
  • Soundboard 9.5 - Right here, this is the one to get from this tour. Sparkling! Note: Of all the Yes shows I have heard, and I have heard many, although there are many close seconds, for some reason this is my all time favorite. The Audio is superb and the vibe is present with both the audience and the band. Stunning!  
  • Audience 8.8 - A warm and inviting recording that spreads the audio spectrum out very evenly. May be from midway back in the hall, as it is not super sharp, but likewise it is also not too echoey or bassy either. It is a pretty atmospheric sound, with guitar leads swirling above and around adding to the liveness of the recording.
  • Audience 8.8 - This is a tape that does improve as it goes ultimately coming to a comfortable place, and one might say it is warm and well balanced. When I hear this I can better appreciate this period of the band, when they were experimenting with their music trying to find a place in the changing world of FM radio and top 40. Does that make it bad?  I used to shake my head, but now I understand it, and I find that what they were doing was NEEDED in order to prevent ALL music from that time period sucking so much.   • Audience 8.6 - The key to enjoying this show is you have to turn it up very loud as the levels are low.
  • Audience 8.4 - A very good 8.4! So what I mean is, as any die hard Yes collector will probably agree with me on, is that the 1978 and 1979 period of Yes is perhaps their absolute zenith. This performance here is right up there with the best of the best, and the rating might be misleading because while it is maybe on the “average” side, it is still a good representation, giving you pretty good stage sound balance but maybe missing a little separation of instruments (drums get a little buried)- but overall this one should be thoroughly enjoyed by the Yes fan as it’s all here, and reasonably good too!
  • Audience 7.2 - Crowded in the middle, with more definition contained in the upper frequencies, but too much clutter for me on this one. Good for the serious collector, as most people know the band really hit their stride on the European leg of this tour.
  • Audience 8.8 - Clear solid and a good live mix where everything is clearly heard.
  • FM Broadcast 8.9 - This recording was done from the radio broadcast even though most people think it is from the reels (it is from a reel to reel, but a recording made from the broadcast). However, once the live over the air sound mix is sorted out, it becomes pretty darn good and even if the tape has some signs of age, it’s a great document and well worth getting.   • Audience 7.4 - Decent for the time and you can hear ever instrument and clearly enough so I think this was remastered. It is a very good 1971 audience recording. It does lack a little depth in my opinion.
